New Year’s Eve:
Beef Broccoli Lo Mein, Spring Rolls & Fortune Cookies

Beef Broccoli Lo Mein _ New Year's Eve tradition

Served New Year’s Eve along with fortune cookies I bought at the bulk barn.  Had enough to pack 2 servings in aluminum trays and carried over to neighbour’s house for their enjoyment wishing them a happy new year!  It really felt like authentic Chinese takeout.

Served with purchased egg rolls and enjoyed with friends over a glass or two of wine.  Dish was so filling no other sides were needed.  Later we all broke open a fortune cookie to see how we would all fare for the coming year!

Beef Broccoli Lo Mein
8 oz uncooked spaghetti
1 t dark sesame oil
1 T peanut oil
1 T minced garlic
4 garlic cloves, minced
3 c chopped broccoli
1.5 c vertically sliced onion
1 lb flank steak, trimmed and cut across grain into long, thin strips
3 T low sodium soy sauce
2 T brown sugar
1 T oyster sauce
1 T chile paste with garlic

Cook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and drain.’
Combine pasta and sesame oil, tossing well to coat.

While pasta cooks, heat peanut oil in a large nonstick skillet over med high heat.  Add ginger and garlic, sauté 30 seconds.  Add broccoli and onion, sauté 30 seconds.  Add steak and sauté 5 minutes or until done.  Add pasta mixture, soy sauce, and remaining ingredients.  Cook 1 minute or until lo mein is thoroughly heated, stirring constantly.
